Seeds and Seed Catalogues

Just past the mid point of December and my Christmas shopping is almost complete, I have one last gift to purchase and I’m waiting for a handful to arrive via courier.

Time to start think about the vegetable garden and what I intend to grow. It’s my intention to slowly add heirloom and heritage crops to my garden, starting this spring. I hope to start saving seeds for future gardens.

I’m in the process of finding companies and plan to start ordering seed catalogues shortly. I plan to only use organic heirloom seeds, preferably from Canadian suppliers. I’ll continue to add to this list as I find more. I still may purchase locally grown plants from garden centres, depending on the variety  of seeds available and how well my seedlings do. In future years I will be able to grow and start my own without needing to purchase store bought seedlings.

Common seed descriptions:
“U” – Untreated – Seeds that have been produced without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or genetic modification.
“O” – Organic
– Seeds harvested from organically grown parent plants.
“OP” – Open Pollinated
– Seeds capable of reproducing on their own. these seeds can be dried and saved for future planting.
“H” – Heritage
- Seeds that have been saved and shared by others, passed down from previous generations of gardeners and farmers. This is typically done to preserve unique characteristics and the genetic diversity of plants

Here’s a List of local and some not so local but all Canadian suppliers.

I had no idea there were so many seed catalogues out there! I’ve only ever used Dominion. It’s always nice to spend a lousy winter evening curled up with one of these, plotting away for spring :)
